It’s the beginning of “The Party” Competition at Filmaka! Make a 1-3 film on this theme and you could win funding to direct your feature film! The competition is judged by esteemed international filmmakers Werner Herzog, Zak Penn, Colin Firth, Paul Schrader, and more! Each month there is a new theme and 15-20 filmmakers receive $1500-$4500. Three of them go on to compete for feature funding at the end of the year. Last year’s final winner, Nuru Rimington-Mkali, got $5 million to direct his film! Submissions are due January 12, 2009. Want to make a positive impact on the world? Interested in cycling the Pacific Coast or Europe?

Join one of the two 2009 tours where teams of 25 young people between the ages of 18-30 pedal from either Vancouver, B.C. to Tijuana, Mexico OR Amsterdam, Netherlands to Istanbul, Turkey to raise funds and awareness about how microcredit can help developing world entrepreneurs lift THEMSELVES out of poverty.

Two 2009 tours:
• Pacific Coast Tour: beginning May 31, 7 weeks, 3000 km from Vancouver, B.C. to Tijuana, Mexico
• Europe Tour: beginning July 1, 8 weeks, 4000 km from Amsterdam to Istanbul

Visit Dunbar Haunted House for Free (also accepting donations for charities)

If you’re in the Vancouver area and looking for some scares before Halloween, there is a haunted house operated in the Southlands that you can visit free of charge That being said, donations are welcome and proceeds will go to the BC Professional Fire Firefighters’ Burn Fund, Vancouver Police Union Charitable Foundation and BC Childhood Cancer Parents’ Association. The haunted house raised over $19,000 for charities last year.

It’s a jolly residential home that has been impressively dressed up into a scary, scary place. In past years, the haunted house stirred up enough enough interest to warrant a story over at Canada.com. The haunted house is open during the day, but the experience is far better at night.
