Hi, there.  I am perplexed as to why the majority of Canadian Universities that provide a BBA or a Bcom degree have very similar prerequisites compared to Capilano’s.  For example: Even though UBC offers a Bcom, and SFU offers a BBA they BOTH include calculus courses in their programs.
I find it strange that a University that is offering a comprehensive 4 year degree such as a (Capilano) BBA does not even have principles of math 12 as a prerequisite.
Why are the requirements and layout so different at Cap than from other BC leading institution’s such as UVIC, UNBC, UBC, SFU etc. (all of which require calculus).

From the research I have gathered BBA’s and Bcom’s are supposed to be very similar but Cap’s is pretty different…..
I live really close to Cap and was planning to either do their 2 year commerce transfer to UBC or their 4 year BBA.

What should I do?  (I want to go to Capilano regardless).

Thanks so much

I am guessing because capilano is a fairly new university,it was just a colledge not to long ago. Also it does not have as good a reputation as some of the other universities ,so perhaps they want to make it easier to get accepted,to attract more students. The better students will want to go to UBC

We too live close to Cap university, but our daughter has decided to go to UBC instead, because she is convinced it is the better choice.

I would think in the short term it may make a big difference in the job and the pay employers may be willing to give you based on which university you got your degree from.

so you need to way your options, go to the university that is closest for your convenience, or go to one that has a better reputation and possible a better outcome career wise.

However once you are established in your profession, the university you attended will have a much smaller inpact for hiring ,it will boil down to your job performance.

I asked my husband about this who has an MBA and does the hiring for his business.

A business degree at Capilano, Langara, Douglas etc is different that their transfer programs to UBC, SFU, etc.  The transfer programs focus on the specific universities prereq. courses for transfer to third year.  The transfer program for SFU will be different than UBC.  You must make sure the courses you take are recognized by the university you are transferring to.  You need calculus and statistics for both SFU and UBC.  The Capilano program prepares you to earn your degree within that specific university.  My understanding is that Capilano’s degree is not recognized outside of BC.  If you want to earn an MBA at Toronto (for example) your degree may not recognized.  If you want to specialize in accounting, the Capilano degree is good to get you into a CA, CGA, or CMA program.

Actually that’s incorrect. Although the reputation is not the same as UBC or SFU it is still recognized throughout the country. The BBA is very new so there’s not much info about it’s recognition yet. However other programs at cap are recognized as shown in this article: http://www.capilanou.ca/news-events/success-stories/govind-singh.html

Also, BCIT students have been accepted at Queen’s MBA program as well. I would still suggest getting a degree from SFU, UBC or UVIC but it’s not like the programs at the smaller universities and colleges are wothless. It will be harder to get into good masters programs later on but it will not be impossible.

It’s going to take years for those new universities to get a reputation, it didn’t happen over night for UBC or SFU either.
