hey everyone, I’m currently in grade 12 and I’m from Toronto, Ontario. I’ve been accepted to couple of ontario universities, such as: UTSC, UOIT, BROCK, YORK, WATERLOO for Health/Life Sciences (which is basically Bachelor of Science). I also applied to UBC when I heard about it being a really good university. I applied both campuses, UBC VANCOUVER and UBC OKANAGAN. Unfortunately, I got rejected from UBC VANCOUVER even with a 84.6% avg.. But, I got accepted to UBC OKANAGAN. I want to move to B.C. cuz of the nice weather (at least it’s better than toronto). I’m probably gonna live on res. for the first year and then my parents will possibly move to surrey, which is only 40 minutes away from UBC Vancouver. I’m determined to go to UBC OKANAGAN and live in Kelowna as it itself is a beautiful city. But, I was just wondering, is UBC OKANAGAN even a good campus? I mean since this campus is not in Vancouver itself, it kinda looks like it just has the name UBC in front of it but no one really cares about it. AND ALSO, If anyone of you can tell me that if I will be able to transfer into Bachelor of Science at UBC Vancouver for the second year? All i wanted to know was, is it easy to transfer from UBC Okanagan to UBC Vancouver, Bachelor of Science Program? What are the conditions one has to meet, and what is the difficulty level of UBC Okanagan in compared to that of UBC Vancouver? If you can help me with this question, I’d really be thankful to you. Thanks!
Simple go to UBC Okanagan for a year and transfer for the second year. Who knows maybe you’ll love Kelowna many people seem to think it’s the place to live.

I know it is a good loophole to move into the real campus despite not having what it takes to get in directly. You see, if you go to colleges such as Langara, or Kwantlen, you will have to qualify to get accepted, whereas, all you got to do is pass if you are the Okanagan campus. That is the upside. The downside is that there isn’t a Sikh Temple where you can get free langar nearby over there is there, like you can in Vancouver?
sorry, i don’t realyl get what you said. So you’re tellin’ me that UBC okanagan is shyt? and i shouldn’t go there? ...and where’d this langar thing came out of? LOL

Well, it is easier to get into than the main campus. It is a good loophole to go to Oakangan and then just register to the main campus later. Langar is excellent free food offered at the Sikh Temple, and it is good to go and eat there as a starving student. You might want to consider doing security work while going to school so that you can get paid to do your own homework. It is like getting a research grant than going to a job.

It isn’t hard at all since you are already a UBC student. You just have to tell them that you are changing. That is, if you are not majoring in anything yet. By the way, I am glad that you guys have provided me and many of my friends free food so that I could save money.

I never heard of security guard jobs being hard to get. We do so much overtime it is not funny. All I do is watch movies and do homework doing 12 hour shifts 7 days a week as a student. I then eat free langar banking my money while saving money. Have you heard of anyone saving money while going to school? Most people think it is good enough if you don’t get into debt, but I like to save my cheques and bank it while going to school so I can have a small condo when I come out. We are short staffed. Steven if you come to Vancouver, I can gurantee you will have so much cushy free ride job it is not even funny. The trouble is, if you have a girlfriend and you are always either at work or going to school and have no extracurricular time to yourself, then you can make money go to school but end up being alone. There are times when you start to think what is the point of making all this money if you have no friends left to enjoy it together with? You’ll love it for the first few months until you discover that you have no life.

shitt, you’re right. no point in workin so much and not enjoyin’ life. ye i’m thinkin of just dealin’ my first year at oakangan campus and then hopefully i’ll be able to switch into UBC vancouver campus.
btw, i heard UBC Okanagan is known as pretty shyt for some reason. Eventhough it’s only another campus of UBC, people still think of it as it does not even exist LOL.. is this true?

That is right. But if you want to make some money doing easy security work while doing your homework, it is like getting free money. You will also not have to take out a student loan and you will have as much in the bank as your fellow students will be owing. You will move forward financially at the rate of them going backwards after you pay all your expenses. You are a Sikh, so you can eat at the Ross St Sikh Temple on Ross and SW Marine Drive when you come to Vancouver campus. With the olympics coming, and many security firms getting desperate, you can tell them that you want only cushy sites, and they will give it to you since they are desperate right now. I am making more money than my friend who is a BC Transit bus driver because I have been going to work 168 hours biweekly, just to do my homework. But I tell you, I have no life! But if you want good grades this is a good way to force yourself to practice. If you are Hindu or a Buddhist, you can get paid to do mantras and meditate on company time. I know a Tibetan Buddhist who is working on his various khey rim practices on his shift doing his sandhana. Doing Vajrasattva mantras or Guru Yoga is anther thing that some have done.
yeah eh, that’s a sikk point you made rigtht there. Due to the olympics, they’ll definitely need more security guards. Haha and the langar thing is just awesome, good way to save your money. I just HOPE it’s easy to switch into UBC Vancouver Bachelor of Science program from UBC Okanagan, otherwise, everything will get ruined.

You know, they are desperate even now. You can work maximum hours even now. You will have all the time in the world to do those many hours of homework you will have to do to study for calculus, chemistry, biology, etc. If you are in science, you could use a lot of overtime to get the work done. Yes, your Langar is awesome, and I am very thankful for the Sikh community for offering Langar to me. Unlike the Christian churches which gives old food catered to the homeless, the Sikh food is made for middle class people so the quality is so much better. In fact, the Sikh temple food is good for middle class folks like myself also. You know, even you should just come to Vancouver campus and work for a contract security company that will pay you overtime. Make sure youwork for a large security company where they have many sites you can choose from.
yeah styll, it’d be really beneficial working an easy job as well doing homework at the site. But the thing is since I’ll need to go to UBCO for the first year, I’ll probably be at UBC-V by september ‘10. I really dunno when the olympics are gonna be held, but I’m afraid all those jobs may not be there by then.

Dont worry Steve, to be honest, the security industry booms during the recession, and there are lots of labour hours with or without the olympics. This has been the case since 9-11. And when the economy booms, labour shortages causes security guards to still work overtime. When prices of commodities rise, theft also rise on construction sites, and security becomes in high demand. You see Steve, security is one industry that if you enter it, you will be job secure for life like becoming a nurse. Of course, a nurse and a security guard are equally immune for employment, but when you start to have kids and all, you will voluntarily reduce your overtime hours to be with family members. But, overtime will be reduced on your time, at your choice. There are limitations though. You should never do any recreational drugs whatsoever while you are in college. Now, I don’t mean to be a square head, but a criminal record of such nature will bar you from getting a cushy way to finance your education which will only make your flatmates envious. Please, keep clean, and don’t get yourself in trouble. I have known someone who works in a fast food coffee shop who used to work as a security guard but is crying because he now has to work hard for 9.00 an hour with no overtime, and regret to this day having made a mistake during college. So please keep squeeky clean. If you get caught sleeping on the job several times, you may get terminated, or put to an active site for a while, but you will be able to find another company to work for. But getting convicted for drug use will end the fat “research grant” working your cushy shifts financing your way to even a Ph.D. Many security guards who have graduated school actually go back thinking if they are going to sit around, they may as well get educated further while doing it. Some will study and take up a degree just for fun, even if they don’t use the degree later.
I live in Vancouver and had a choice of going to either UBC Van or UBC-O. I chose to go to UBC-O because I wanted to live on residence and UBC-O has a smaller campus and most of it is brand new and really great. Seriously, if you are such a downer about going to UBC-O go find some other options. University is such an important part of your life because you will be here for 8 months and if you are coming in with such a shitty out look you should find something that you will actually look forward to, not bitch about. I loved my first year in UBC-O, classes were great and living on residence was sooo much fun. The profs are great, some coming from UCLA and Stanford, so I’m sure you will get good education, but as long as you get that stick at of your ass, you will have a really fun time along the way too.
hey there
Jann here and i’m in grade 12 as well. I’ll be attending UBC-O in the fall. Although I’ve never been to Kelowna my friend said that when he visited the place he said he loved the campus and the people were really great. He told me I’d love it there. I’m really looking forward to it and the smaller class sizes are perfect for me.

There sure is a lot of misinformation in some of the responses to Steven’s original question. First of all, somebody said UBC V is “the real campus.” This isn’t true at all. This isn’t even slightly true. Read the university act that makes all this stuff real. (Google “bc university act.”) That kind of a statement is flat out arrogance. As for the remarks that going to UBCO is the loophole or backdoor to Vancouver, there are some who think that but they too are wrong. First of all, you might actually find that it is harder to transfer than you think. Because the campuses have different senates, sometimes they have different program requirements. You might take a bunch of credits of PSYO (psychology at UBCO) and discover that they want you to do some different course altogether for the same major in PSYC (psychology at UBCV). Secondly, and more importantly, student satisfaction surveys show on average that UBCO students are happier with their experience than UBCV students. So why would you want to go somewhere where you stand a chance of being less happy? Makes no sense to me. As for the idea that it is harder to get in, well, think that through for slightly more than a nanosecond. What makes it hard? Competition from other students. What if the number of applications for UBCV started to dry up? Do you think that they’d keep their entrance averages high? Not on your life!! Don’t kid yourself. Do your homework. Even right now, admissions averages are lower at UBCV for certain programs (e.g. Forestry). So it is not some pie in the sky excellence standard that determines entrance cutoffs. It’s sheer market demand. As soon as the word really gets out that UBCO delivers better student results, more people will apply, but spaces are limited so the entrance average will go up. Before long, it will be harder to get into UBCO than UBCV. Does it logically follow that UBCO can then condescendingly say that UBCV is the backdoor to UBCO? Give yourselves a shake! Apart from program availability—for example, there is no agriculture program at UBCO, so why would you go there, and there is no cultural studies major at UBCV, so why would you go there?—the only legitimate reason to change campuses either way is that professor so-and-so is there, and I want to be successful in his field, so I will go there. So, depending upon what you field of interest is, then I would look at the data on research success that the university maintains itself (starting at http://www.pair.ubc.ca/index.htm and look for reports and summary profiles by campus). I would first consider going wherever their success rate was better for research money as an average per facuilty member, because that’s code for “market respectability.” In the case of a tie or near tie, I’d then start considering other things, like average class sizes (all of which are better at UBCO) and something that maybe you never think about at all—how many of your courses will be taught by people that the university is actually exploiting by not appointing them as regular professors! I think you’ll be surprised by what you discover. UBCV profs are fond of saying that the proportion of students per faculty member is low, making it sound like you should go there because you’ll get to know your profs better, etc., etc. But look at those spreadsheets carefully! They can only say that because they are only counting the regular faculty from the get go! This is almost fraudulent!! Everybody takes English, so let’s use that as an example: in UBCV, they say the student to faculty ratio is 16 to 1. Sounds great, doesn’t it? But look closely. It says “excluding students taught by sessionals.” Then look right above that in their very own spreadsheet and it says the Sum of Student FTE (Domestic and ISI) per FT Faculty is actually 30 to 1. That means that half of your English profs are temps, fairly often less than fully qualified people. Why are they hired? They’re hired so that they can PACK YOU IN, shrinking the number of available spaces so they can create the impression that their standards are actually higher. This is nonsense! They’re misleading you to make themselves look better. Give yourselves a shake, you guys! Depending upon your intended program of study, you might be way better off choosing to go to UBCO, where the profs are younger, more energetic, and better looking. Plus it’s only about a half hour away from Big White.
