The good news is that Barack Obama won. The bad news is that negative-minded blacks have been using that fact to demean or annoy “whitey.” By all means celebrate, but don’t denigrate other Americans or other human beings. In fort Lauderdale lives a white woman whose first name is Sandy. A single mother whose adorable little son calls me “Uncle Vik,” she is struggling to pay her mortgage, feed herself and her child, and has been forced to tolerate ongoing offensive remarks and racial stereotyping at her workplace from black co-workers.
I gave her the number and address of the Broward County office of civil rights over the phone tonight. Black women working in her place have regularly been making remarks poking ridicule at whites as a group. Today one woman said her mother told her to be careful in public, because many “salty crackers” are going to be pretty upset that a black man became president.
Suppose it were in reverse. Suppose Sandy, being a white person, made a joke that she need a flashlight in that office because since everyone else is black, she had trouble seeing in the dark? Can you imagine the brouhaha that that would raise?! One-sided justice is nothing but a mockery of all justice itself; there simply is no such thing. You either have consistent justice, or no justice at all.
I gave Sandy moral support, and will stick behind her in her fight for justice. Once she has a chance, she will file a complaint about an ongoing pattern of racial harassment on the job. What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. We need to send a blunt message that WHITES HAVE CIVIL RIGHTS, TOO.
