Souvenirs explores generational and culture gaps
between an immigrant father and his raised-in-Canada daughter

“I come from you. And mom. That’s where I’m from.” – Maggie to her father (Souvenirs)

SOUVENIRS, by Michele Riml and featuring Rachel Aberle and Ron Lea, opens Friday November 13, 2009 at Presentation House Theatre (333 Chesterfield Avenue, North Vancouver, BC), and runs until November 29, 2009.

For as long as she can remember, Maggie’s immigrant “old school” father Gustav has been building his perfect Lake House. But his dream of creating the perfect place in a rural outcrop of his adopted country has come at a price, driving away his wife and preventing him from seeing his daughter regularly. When Maggie shows up at her father’s house on an unusual mission, her unexpected visit unfolds into a dramatic – at times, funny – life changing journey for both father and daughter.

Of Souvenirs, Riml says, “When I was 16, I wrote a very short play about my father called Souvenirs. My drama teacher entered it into The BC Young Playwright’s search and I won. This event was transformative for me as I had just lost my father, was skipping school and not really very connected to anything. When I saw the actors perform the play, I was amazed at how theatre could connect us all. I was smitten. That small play was the genesis for this play, which explores the relationship between two people who are used to hiding and lying to protect themselves and who are forced to take off their masks – in this case, a father and daughter.”

This new production for teens, young adults, and adult audiences, commissioned by Green Thumb from award-winning playwright Michele Riml, is produced by Green Thumb Theatre in co-production with Prairie Theatre Exchange.

Souvenirs is by Michele Riml. Director is Jennifer Brewin. Actors are Ron Lea and Rachel Aberle. Design by Brian Perchaluk. Lighting by Ereca Hassell.
