GHAZNI, Afghanistan - An Afghan teenager is in serious condition in hospital after her mother and brother allegedly sliced open her belly to remove a five-month-old foetus from a rape, officials said on Tuesday.

The girl's relatives, who are farmers, had apparently decided to remove the unborn child to protect the family honour, a local governor said, with rape and pregnancy outside of marriage a disgrace in this conservative society.

More stupidity from Iran and its theocracy

AFTER a life of spinsterhood, Setareh, an 80-year-old Iranian, assumed she was fated to see out her remaining days alone and was preparing to move into an old people's home for company.

When the boy-next-door from her youth suddenly reappeared and proposed, she thought her long-forgotten dreams of marriage were about to be fulfilled.

But Iran's laws require a father to give permission before a daughter can marry.

Now the lovestruck octogenarian has asked a Tehran court to establish whether her father, who abandoned her when she was two, is dead or alive so her wedding can go ahead.

CRIMINALS with suspected links to witch doctors have murdered a six-year-old albino girl in Burundi in eastern Africa and taken her severed limbs.

"A group of bandits armed with rifles attacked the home of a six-year-old albino called Cizanye,'' said local official Remi Sengiyumva.

"These criminals decapitated her and then chopped off her arms and legs, which they took with them,'' he said.

At least two albinos were murdered and mutilated in September in Burundi.

Police had said they suspected criminals of hunting albinos to sell their organs and limbs to witch doctors in Tanzania who use them for lucky charms.

"This little girl is the third albino victim of such barbaric crimes in our province since September. We are doing everything we can to find the killers,'' Ruyigi province prosecutor Nicodeme Gahimbare said.

The recent attacks against the small central African country had prompted the local authorities to set up a shelter where the albinos in Ruyigi province were invited to gather.

In neighbouring Tanzania, at least 27 albinos, mostly women and children, have been killed in different parts of the country over the past year alone.

Albinism is a congenital lack of the melamin pigment in the skin, eyes and hair which protects from the sun's ultraviolet rays.

Albinos are vulnerable to medical complications and social discrimination in Africa.
