May 13, 2008: The forecast 2008 Episodic Tremor and Slip (ETS) event is now underway beneath southern Vancouver Island on Canada's west coast. Tremor is observed on the seismographs and GPS instruments are beginning to move to the west. ETS events happen about every 15 months beneath southern Vancouver Island. They are so regular they can be forecast. ETS events cannot be felt, and pose no threat to the public. Click here for technical details. May 13, 2008 - Finally it is an official ETS. Herb Draggert from PGC reports significant displacements are taking place at north-western Washington sites. The Mount Olympus site is moving nearly 5mm westward which is significant. The "footprint" of the displacement also seems to be expanding. However, he still doesn't see much movement north of the Juan de Fuca Straights. Usually by this time there would be hints of motion up north. Time will tell. Tim Melbourne of CWU agrees that motions have started in Washington and that his long baseline tilt meter records show tilts that are significant compared to the past three months. maybe having big EARTHQUAKE this week |

I highly doubt a major earthquake will hit Vancouver anytime soon. It's just being hyped in the media because of the one in China. The media only wants tro sell news papers, and have people read thier media.

june 4, 2008 - Garry Rogers of the PGC reports that there has only been very weak sporatic tremor over the last 24 hours and thus this ETS may be over. Unless we see or the PGC sees more tremor in the next few days, this will be the last report for this ETS.

The China earthquake was @ 8.0, a 9.0 (which people suspect will happen in Vancouver) will be roughly 10x stronger.

there is more seismic activity on the western side of the pacific plate to compensate for anything on this side of it.
as well, the usual place where stress is relieved is in california. stronger activity occurs from mt st helens through north california and onto the san andreas. however, this may be due to a lot of water in dams on the fraser and the columbia rivers. the dams in south western US are different as the water in them are being depleted first by evaporation and second by irrigation. indeed, the water levels are lower than normal. |

accurate news indeed
HAARP will be playing an active roll in the seismic activity you refer {when it happens?} Possibly US military involvemnt will be implemented on Canadian soil. People are well advised to avoid being in the vicinity of military or police prensence as this could result in a hazard to your well being. That area is part of the ring of fire and Vancouver has been lucky for the lack of large quakes but the lack of little quakes is bad, it means pressure is building somewhere, HAARP will not be the cause. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recent...n/N_America.php Look at the map and where you have a lack of activity on the map where there is a fault is where a large one is possible.

Blue Frost has it right. It's the lack of energy released is where a big one will occur. That being said we are somewhat protected from a lot of activity by being sandwiched in between the Yuan De Fuca Plate. Although there is constant activity spaning the Ring of Fire, it's interesting to note the ETS are increasing in frequency and this itself may precipitate the "Big One" A swarm they call it in geological terms. I am just an amature in this field but have had an interest in this area of the world for awhile.
I live up here in the valley for a variety of reasons. One of which, I sincerely believe, that we will experience a large EQ [in lower BC on the coast] within my lifetime. On a parralel note Yellowstone National Park is being watched closely also. They expect a Super Volcano within decades soon. And why do I mention this...well...one could precipitate the other. There is constant earth movement in/around YellowStone..so much so that there is a special team perched right above it now taking readings and the public is not allowed to enter this area. In the recent EQ in China, the scientists from around the world were warning China of this event and they shrugged it off.The same could be said for this one apparently starting now around southern Vancouver Island and region. Be assured it will will be a destructive one to all communication links and infrastructure as there will be no roads, no air traffic save helicopters & no docks..in order for safe disaster relief.People will have to be ready and be self reliant with emergency equipement such as generators and a good supply of safe drinking water and dried food. Etc. Places like Richmond will simply cease to exist as they are on a lower elevation... Sure California is where most of the Pacfic Plate stress is released but not all as I stated initially..consider the Yuan De Fuca Plate....again!!! |

june 12, 2008 - This is the wrap-up of this ETS since nothing new has been seen since the tremor on Vancouver Island seems to have died out on June 2. This may have been one of the longer lasting ETSes recorded based on the tremor record. While there were short bursts of tremor in April the more continuous record didn't start until May 4 and was located under the southeast corner of the Olympics (just north of the southern end of Hood Canal. After slowly moving north northwest for about a week it was under the Straights of Juan de Fuca about May 11-12. On May 15 it clearly divided into a patch just moving onto southern Vancouver Island and a second patch in souther Puget Sound (near Olympia). This southern patch only lasted for three days while the northern patch seemed to stick around souther Vancouver Island before moving on northward around May 18-20. While the GPS signals from this ETS were reported to be weaker than some previous ones they can be clearly seen on some stations in northwest Washington as well as southern Vancouver Island (in particular P418 & P436 starting in early to mid May, SC02 & ALBH in mid May, BAMF & CLRS in late May).

I drove from California through Nevada and Idaho last year. They had a humungous volcanic eruption that covered large parts of Montana and Idaho thousands of years ago. It really staggers the imagination to see how many thousand of square miles was covered with lava.
If you ever get a chance it is worth it to go see craters of the moon national park. |
