There are many things you can do to screw with collection agents to make their lives difficult. Here are some;
1) When they call tell them never to call you or contact you by mail or you will register a Ministry complaint against the collector and the company. Legally the collections agency has to expunge your phone # and cease from sending you any written corespondence. The threat of one year in jail and a $10,000 fine should do the trick. To sound like a pro tell them to "9 out" your number! 2) If you have no intention of paying your bill NEVER pay a trivial amount just to shut them up or to delay further payment. A payment of even a penny sets the statute of limitations on the debt back to day one. Do not get suckered in by this tactic. 3) The statute of limitations on a debt in BC is six years. 4) The threat to sue is just that an empty threat. If you owe less than $1,000 you will NEVER be sued by a collections agency or it's clients. Realistically they probably won't sue you unless the debt is more than $2,000. 5) If you intend to pay always pay the company you owe directly, this causes accounting nightmares at the collection firm. 6) Most public utilities will settle for 80% of the debt after 3 months and 60% after 8 months. So ignore their puch for you to pay in full now! |
