$9-$11/hr after two years.
Look @ the people doing those jobs-they are the dumbest losers on earth why pay them any more? They do nothing all day and if something actually happens and the cops have to be called the cops won't even talk to a private security guard they ignore them completely. |

Depending on what company you work for, you can make anywhere from $9-14 per hour. Private contract security isn't the highest paying job in the world. If you get on in-house somehere like UBC campus security, Brentwood/Lougheed mall security you can make up to around $15-17 per hour. People will tell you it's a crappy job, you're a wannabe cop, etc... but somebody has to do the job whether anyone likes it or not. The people who call you these names are usually the ones you just found doing something wrong, and called them on it. They're just embarassed you caught them, that's all. Either that or they're just complete @ssholes.

Compost ion of the private security force - 80% Seniors & such. 10% Got beat up in high school and want to use force on somebody.....anybody. 10% Good honest folk trying to do a job. People that assign names like rent-a-cop are usually the ones that know somebody that got the living crap kicked out of them by 9 disgruntled security guards at the monster trucks/rock concert for little to no reason. I have a friend that used to work the security at BC Place. The stories that came out of him..... |

Look @ the people doing those jobs-they are the dumbest losers on earth why pay them any more? Actually, the dumbest losers on earth are the guys who sit near the commercial skytrain and panhandle for beer money. They make up stupid signs, hoping people will pay them because their signs are creative. They readily admit they need money for beer on the signs. At least private security people are working for a living and making a contribution to society, unlike the people who expect a handout for beer money. Think about all the people who break into your car, house, etc... They are losers too. Private security is nothing to get excited over, but it's a job. Some people make a decent living at it when they get up to a managerial level, some do it while going to school, some do it as something to keep them busy after retirement. My dad did private security for a few years after he retired as an airline pilot. Perhaps you should think before you type, not everyone who does security is the same. |

I had a couple buddies that would go play Violin & Mandolin in downtown Victoria for two hours. Two hours of fun they would make $400. At least private security people are working for a living and making a contribution to society, Some of them. Perhaps you should think before you type, not everyone who does security is the same. All too true. |

Private security is a relatively new and completely unnecessary profession. I wouldn't say that. Take away private security and see what happens. Property crime would triple, and the police would be overwhelmed. The police dont have the manpower to respond to everything. private security is not new. it's been around for ages. who do you call when youre locked out of your office after hours? security. who keeps the bums from loitering around your condo building? security/concierge. private security isn't glamorous, it isn't the best job in the world. |

Sorry with relatively new I meant of the last few decades. There were certainly no security guards in the 40's like we see today. And I mean completely unnecessary in that 3/4 of it is ineffective. Security guards job is to call the cops, not do anything about it. But yeah, it was a blanket stereotype, there is some purpose, although it's sad that we require them. |

It should be against the law to give beggar's money in the same way it's against the law to pick up hitchhikers. You are not helping, and the receiver is likely making more money than anybody working a retail/mcdonalds type job. |

Some security guards are permitted to make citizens arrests if they find someone committing a crime against the property they are working on, such as loss prevention associates. This is not too common with run of the mill security guards, as the provincial government prohibits the use of handcuffs/restraint devices by contracted security guards. It's sad we require them in society, but there are some people out there that make it so the industry exists. |

You are allowed to use as much force as is used against yourself. |

Why not apply with the VPD?? Same qualifications as a security guard but you get to carry a gun and a badge.... instead of $10 bucks an hour, you'll be making $42 bucks an hour!

SOC is entry level, you just ask for it when you apply. Airside escort I dunno but nothing to lose by applying. Airside escort pays about $17/hr, they sit in cars watching DVD's while the construction workers they're supposed to be watching work. |

I'd rather do security tech, you get to pick your shifts and what company you wana work at. Also minimum to start is $20/hour. There are alot better jobs than risking your ass being a cop and especially you have a family to look after. |

P.S. I'd highly Recommend Concord Security if you want to get into this field. The job itself is a really good stepping stone for many other possible career paths. This post has been edited by InfamousAznGuy: Nov 18 2008, 10:46 PM |
