Hello!
I don't consider myself a "regular" Wal-Mart shopper by any means, maybe 3 to 4 time a year, if that... I do think that most Wal-Marts are fairly large in size, but was truly surprised at just how BIG the newer South Surrey location is! We venture out yesterday, in the POURING rain, out to 24th Ave & 160th, to find the newer (open maybe 6 months?) location. And I guess because it also contains a whole grocery store as well (groceries, frozen foods, dairy & produce), it's almost twice the size of any other lower mainland Wal Mart!! This store is H-U-G-E!! All in all, we didn't find any great deals... There were some decent deals, but in fact some items are cheaper elsewhere... But I guess that's tha same just about anywhere... Costco has some deals, but not everything is a deal at Costco... The one item I did notice was milk... We usually buy the 2 litre carton, and it must be in the $3.50 range at Safeway, and it was under $3 at Wal Mart... ALSO, Wal-Mart is OPEN 24 hours Dec 1 through Dec 23rd... They're building the biggest Walmart in North America over in Victoria. The lot is seriously the size of BC place, looks like it'll take an hour to walk across.

Walmart may be american but at least they support Canadian buisness. Many of their products are from Candian sources and companies. Places like the Bay, Zellars, Canadian Tire, etc. buy their stuff from overseas. What's worse: a Canadian company that buys overseas and sell that to Canadians or an American company that buys Canadian and sells to Canadians. |

If Walmart is so good, why are people opposing them in Vancouver? That one on Marine Drive has been opposed by everyone.

walmart hires lots of people, if there are alternative higher paying jobs, most people would work for those. mom and pop stores only hire a handful of people. So walmart is a good thing. also if lots of walmart employees get together they can form a union.

They are apparently changing the Queensborough store into a superstore as well (which is why there is an empty lot beside it). Then Surrey store is awesome, we went at halloween and they had twice the selection as the other stores.

QUOTE (Marion Morrison @ Dec 3 2008, 09:06 PM)
If Walmart is so good, why are people opposing them in Vancouver? That one on Marine Drive has been opposed by everyone. Because it kills mom & pop boutique stores, and drys up the economy by hiring people for slave wages. What do you consider slave wages? Minimum? Guess what mom/pop pays? So do most entry level jobs. The difference being that Walmart can afford benefits, pay increases and promotions...mom/pop can't. As for opposing...most of the opposition was coming from the COPE councillors...I think you'll see a Walmart in south Van soon. Why do people oppose it? Because in Canada, it's hip to oppose "big" companies and "big" stores...you know, the businesses that hire hundreds and thousands of people. |
