Warner Brothers was having a side by side comparison on a 42" HDTV of the Blu-Ray and DVD version of "Dark Knight" in our local mall. I was surprised that Blu-Ray was not that significantly better than DVD. I always thought that Blu-Ray would be significantly better than DVD. Anybody have the same feeling when watching a Blu-Ray movie against a DVD movie?

Unless you have a giant super-sized screen (52' + minimum), I'd agree that Blu-Ray is kinda useless.
Kinda like listening to a 320 kbs mp3, and then listening to the lossless audio on the original CD. There is no detectable difference, to the average person's eyes, and ears. What a scam. |

Anybody have the same feeling when watching a Blu-Ray movie against a DVD movie? I'm guessing you mean blu-ray and standard formatt. Being dvd is the disk they are both recorded on. One of the reasons blu is better and main reason it won over the HD formatt is because of how much more information can be recorded to the dvd disk in blu-ray. It compresses better, so if you have the right equipment you can experience better than the movie theator experience. But if your hoping for that on an old tv it's not going to happen. You need the whole package, speaker system with seround sound 7.1, HDtv (plasma or LCD) etc.. However the old standard formatt will be gone soon and blu is going to be the standard, so at some point we will all have to break down and get blu-ray players or you wont be able to play the new dvd's coming out. There wasn't really much difference between the HD and Blu in video quality if any at all. It was just the amount of compression they could get on the dvd disk.. almost doubled the amount of info that was able to be recorded on the dvd. I'm quite happy with my regular, old fashioned DVD thankyou very much. And no, I don't like the notion of someone else making the decision for me (and by extension, how much money I should spend) as to what kind of electronic equipment I have in my livingroom. That is MY decision to make. |

I own a 42" HDTV with a Blu-ray player and I can confirm that with most movies the difference is marginal. I will only rent the blu-ray version if the movie has CGI or one of those Pixar-type deals.
I just watched WALL-E on blu-ray and it was spectacular but when Zack and Miri make a porno comes out, you might want to take a pass. On blu-ray that is! |

This is just like when people didn't want to switch from vhs to dvd. Even though it was more convenient to not have to rewind, video quality was better, etc. people still resisted buying one. But when The Matrix dvd came along, a whole bunch of people bought dvd's.

Like I said, I was disappointed in the marginal improvement after seeing the "Dark Knight" in a side by side comparison with DVDs against on 42" HDTVs. Maybe Warner Brothers should stop doing the side by side comparison in the malls, they might sell more Blu-Ray players and movies. |

QUOTE and main reason it won over the HD formatt is because of how much more information can be recorded to the dvd disk in blu-ray Sigh.. no.. HDDVD was the better format.. blue ray just got more support because of the pron industry and because it was in the ps3. This is just like when people didn't want to switch from vhs to dvd. No its not. DVD was a HUGE improvement on vhs. Quality, random access, not having to rewind, no problems with "tracking", etc etc etc.. Bluray wont catch on to the same degree.. The near-future is in downloadable content.. the "next big thing" which will encourage people to upgrade en-masse is proper 3d tv (there's a reason the movie studios are churning out lots of 3d cinema films at the moment). .. And I mean PROPER 3d tv (i.e. no needing glasses) - the tech is there, it's just a tad expensive AT THE MOMENT (but then.. so was 52" hdtvs a few years ago) |
