Truckers protest near Canada Place
Trucks line street by Canada Place

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Traffic in downtown Vancouver was even worse than usual this afternoon, as a convoy of big trucks rolled through the city. Members of the Canadian Auto Workers Union held a protest rally at Canada Place.

The trucks were slowly circling the block around Canada Place, blowing horns and disrupting traffic flow. The rally was being held outside the offices of the Vancouver Port Authority.

Paul Uppal with the CAW says the federal and provincial governments, and the Vancouver Port Authority are not enforcing an agreement on trucking rates. "We have undercutting going on still and it's driving the rates back down." And that's making union drivers angry.

Uppal says the goal is to draw attention to the issues, and not irritate other drivers in traffic.

Canada should just import some more East Indian drivers that are willing to work for nil to replace the unionized drivers that want higher rates. That way, the problem is solved.
