Ok, so I am a complete moron when it comes to computers. The one I have at home now is a piece of crap. I want to get a laptop...nothing fancy. My wife wants to be able to do some work with some photos (on line scrapbooking), we want email, we want internet and to be able to download some music.
Any suggestions and prices? Where is a good place to go? Costco? Future Shop?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Why do you want a laptop? Are you going to be traveling with it? If you can avoid it, you are WAY better off with a desktop computer unless you NEED a laptop.

after having both a laptop and desktop I doubt I would ever go back to a desktop. I do take my computer with me so I need the portability but when it is at home I don't need a desk just the coffee table.

I want the macbook air *sigh*

Where do you live? if you live in Edmonton or close to it theres a place called Byte Track, i had my home computer built there and they have killer deals on Lap tops.

I would never get a computer at Future shop or Costco, your just looking for trouble, First off if there was any problems and you need to take it in for repair you are looking at a min of 2 weeks wait not to mention they SEND it away to get fixed grrrrrrrrrrr. I would look at smalled shops that offer you a good warrenty and that repair THERE computers in house, this way you get the best possible service IMO.

Good Luck

umm PS Dell is garbage

If you travel around, laptops are great. They are great if you are short on space too. Laptops just don't wear like desktops do. Upgrading them is expensive, repairs are expensive, stability issues have been known to come up. I have had both and although I like the portability of a laptop, it just don't have the *umph* I need for gaming, graphic design, photo editing, etc.

I assumed the person was a PC user. Mac's are great for being problem free, I am just not a user myself.

There are good reasons to buy a laptop over a desktop. These days they are all equiped with decent processors, hardware, storage, memory and graphics cards. And all new ones have wireless capability. I only use my desktop for on-line gaming and paying my on-line bills. My laptop is much more versatile for moving around. I can browse the internet from my backyard, kitchen, living room or anywhere in the house. When I travel - either business or vacation - my laptop goes with me to check my e-mail, internet. play my MP3s or just goofing off with simple games. And because its wireless I just find the closest wireless modem (usually the hotel) to get a connection. At around $1000 they are all affordable. I have an HP which has been very reliable but other brands are good too. To fix them any small computer shop can do that if its beyond the store warranty.
Laptops have really progressed in the last 3 years or so.

13 years ago I switched from pc to mac and will never go back. I bought an hp laptop for my daughter for grad and she seems to really like it.

Ok ok they don`t "suck" its just your paying out the nose for the name Dell when you can get one made for half the price you pay at future shop or where ever. Attention: REGISTER / LOGIN to view the image!

Mac's are good for their uses, however they lack the broad capabilities of a properly built and maintained PC.

Have 5 in this office, have had 4 at home and 10 in my old office never had one overheat. Most of my colleagues have macs and none of theirs have ever overheated. It can happen (to both) but they aren't "Prone" to it.

Actually have. Perhaps biased as a Mac fulfills none of my uses for a computer. However there is zero question in terms of performance PC's are superior, as well as broader usage. The only real question is the virus thing, and like I said, a properly maintained PC has nothing to worry about. I've never had a single infection.

OK I'm not going there. Obviously this was not meant to be mac/pc war we see enough of those. Personally I prefer the mac (having spent many years owning both) I have had far fewer problems with my mac and don't have to spend the time/energy/money to "maintain" it.

Also I can do everything that my husband can do on his pc except play a few games (which we don't do much of anyway).

That's fair, PC building is a hobby for me, so I actually enjoy it. The cost isn't bad at all. As I said, Mac's have their uses, and their fans, and that's their niche.

My Dell wasn't that expensive. In fact, it was cheaper than anything I found in a retail store and they delivered it to my house. Anyone above who is dissing Dell actually bought one in the past year? Just curious.

Actually, I have heard first hand nothing but very positive feedback from people with Mac laptops.

I am thinking about getting an other machine , Toshiba is of course #1 on my list.

So , maybe someone can advise me :

  • Warranty on Mac only one year (Toshiba 3 years for the better models)
  • Mac's different interface and layout : does it take time and effort to 'relearn' ?
  • Mac's cost ~ 2.200 , a similar or better packed machine IMO costs less with other brand names.

I can give you a 100% guarantee that I can build a better/more reliable computer for 40% of what a dell costs. Lot's of other companies will too.

check out futureshop and bestbuy

i think they are having sales on laptops, i remember one was like 500$ something for 2gb memory and AMD processor, NVdia 8200 etc. my friend got hers a few weeks back for less than 700$ with 17" screen, pretty good deal if you are not running large software on it, if you are just using it for docs and email etc. I would get one too but I don't need one right now.
