Saw a photo of Tamara Taggart's baby and it looks maybe retarded like it has Downs Syndrome.

Anybody know?

His name is Beckett and he has Down Syndrome.

She was featured in a recent TV Week magazine article that she wrote and her baby does have Down Syndrome.

After reading a bit of the article while at the check out counter at Superstore, I felt sad for her. Apparently, they didn't know about his condition until after he was born.

geez, too bad. I feel sorry for her.

Wonder if certain racial/ethnic combinations are prone to producing these type of abnormalities. guess that's why couples should always get amino sythnesis done.

It has nothing to do with race or mixing or anything. During myosis or mytosis when the chromosomes of each parent are combining one chromosome too few gets pulled into the cell. If this is the cell that is fertilized the baby has Down's Syndrome. Something like that. One less chromosome, could happen to anyone and certainly not anyone's fault. Once the reality sinks in Tamara will realize a full and happy life with Beckett. These kids are often the most unbelievably sweet and loving.

I was told a story once that a couple got an Amnio testing and were told they had a Down's baby. They went through with it anyways and thank goodness they did because the baby was healthy, nothing wrong. So they could of killed a healthy baby. Not everything is 100% and you don't know what life has coming your way. Maybe its just meant to be. I don't think Tamara asked for this, but now she will have to deal the best way she can. Agree, the amnio is not iron-clad evidence of abnormality. The formula is a % chance of Down's based on a number of factors, top among them being age of the mother. That is the real risk and the mother will have to make a judgement call when given the %.

Nope, in fact mixed race babies are genetically stronger....

Downs seems to be more linked to the age of the mother and bad luck...

Don't be sad. I doubt that Taggart feels sorry for herself but rather, I'd guess her conviction is strenthened by the challenge she faces.

There is no need to be in doubt, that's what tests are for. Many women do not get amnio because the procedure cannot be done until 16 weeks into the pregnancy. (You can feel your baby moving by the time results are in.) Men, fyi, it is very difficult to think of abortion when you have connected with the fetus in this way. Also, I know I would never willingly have a doctor stick a needle in my stomach for any reason. Women fyi, there is another test called CVS where results are obtained much earlier than amnio. The test can be done at Week 10-12, with results available in 2 days, as opposed to Week 16 for Amnio with a two-week wait for results. So with CVS you will have the same very important information as much as eight weeks earlier in your pregnancy. You can use this info in any way your personal values dictate. Also, the people I have met with downs syndrome do not give me the impression that they are suffering, they appear happy with a lot less worries than me!

I don't feel sorry at all. I think that is silly. People with down syndrome can function perfectly fine in society and Tamara exudes a personality that is very nurturing and kind.

I didn't know Tamara had a challenged child. Tamara is close to 40 which is a little old to be having kids. I think she should have realized something bad was going to happen. Her husband is in the same age bracket and is half chinese or some asian ethnicity. I agree with the others Tamara should have gotten tested. I doubt she will have another child and now has the burden for the next 20 years atleast taking care of a special needs kid. Then I'am really suprised she got pregnant the natural way without inveetro.

Now she has two things against her a special needs child and the same child has made her gain weight that she probably never lose. I watched CTV news the other day and seen Tamara on TV I never seen her after she popped. Holy man she shouldn't be back to work. I remember watching the Vancouver Breakfast days when Tamara first started she was a attractive woman she didn't seem to have the snobby attitude she has now.

I'm sure she loves her child and will do everything possible for him. But I feel sorry for her, there is no mother who says " I wish my kid will be born with downs syndrome"!

Just a thought, but perhaps Tamara WAS trying to conceive as far back as 5 years and was unable to conceive until now?
I have worked with Mentally Challenged children and the Down's Syndrome child is capable of much - it would depend on the severity of this child's case.

How do you know that maybe she didnt' spend years trying to have kids? not everybody can say" lets have a baby" and make one in a few days ya know!

Have to see how long their marriage lasts.

If its like most marraiges it doesn't have much chance, with or without this child.

I think its just been 5 years since they met then got married last year.

It would depend on how 54-40's prospects are as a band.

I believe that Down's Syndrom is caused by one extra (23rd) chromosone. I will google it in a min to be sure.

ok, i don't understand why people are so mean towards her. she's seems really nice. where are the nasty comments comming from ?????????????????????????? what did she ever do to you.
and, she is not fat. she's not a runway model, but give her a break she just had a baby. you all know what fat looks like, she's may have a few extra pounds, but that is normal after having a baby.
finally, how can anyone say all the mean comments like fat, retarded and she's stupid. are you not afraid someday you too may be faced with something like this. becare what you say, it might come back to you.

she's a wonderful person, and she will have the strenght and courage to deal with this. her beautiful son will be in my prayers.
