Hey Guys,

Just need your opinion on something. I have recently applied for an American Express Aeroplan Credit Card. This CC gives you one mile for every dollar you spend and hence your chances of flying for free are maximized. The anual fee for this CC is only $60.00! There are other Credit Cards that will earn you almost the same amount air miles but the anual fees are higher than the one I applied for.

What are the other best available Credit Cards that earn air miles with very little anual fee in Canada?

Thanks!

Well first off you can't even reserve a hotel let alone rent a car without a CC so I'd say they are very neccessary. I for one would never even think of traveling outside my province without one, can you imagine being in another country (say 3rd world) and have no access to a bank machine and an emergency pops up and you have no CC? No thanks, I'll keep mine and I could go on and on as to what else they are imperative for but I think you get the point or I would hope so.

I have a CIBC Aerogold Visa..i think its the best card for the price..120$ annual fee...and they gave me 15000 aeroplan points to start. Its been 7 months since i got it, and i already have enough for a return trip to LA. its gives 1.5pts/$1 for groceries, gas and 1pt everywhere else. car rental insurance is included, no need to buy tht 23.95/day thing when renting and it covers some travel expenses as well when flt is delayed/rescheduled etc. well worth it.

credit cards and airmiles stuff are scams i don't see the need to give my money to credit card companies regular everytime i use thier cards. paying credit card bills ONLY make these loan sharks richer and is a waste of time

Probably the best deal out there that most people have not heard about - sorry, no air miles here - but it's Citibank's "Driver's Edge". You get 2% accumulation on your cc purchases towards the purchase of a new or used vehicle. The best part is that the vehicle can be purchased anywhere...local dealer, private, even from the US and can be any make and model. The real best part - the card is FREE! :D I don't know of any other cc that gives you the equivalent of 2% cash back for no annual fee.

The accumulation is based on a five year window. If you think about how much you spend on your cc each year, multiply that by by 2%, then you can calculate how much you'd get back when you decide to get another vehicle. e.g. If you spend an average of $25,000 in a year, you'd get $500 in the kitty each year. If you wait five years, you would get $2,500 that you can get back in cold hard cash when you buy a vehicle. That's a lot more bang for the buck than any air mile collection program. I've participated for many years and it really works.

Just be sure to use the cashback after you've gotten the best price for the car. Some car dealerships will trick you into thinking that the cashback reduces your the discount on your car, but don't ever buy that.

I have seen people over spending on unwanted things just to accumulate so called points on their credit card. If you see all the enticing offers with annual fee, without annual fee etc., the dollar value is around 1% of your spending. If that is the case, why not get a cash back credit card. So, that you know what exactly you are getting in return in $$ value? In this simple case you know that if you spend $1000 you will get back $10. So, the over spenders who collect points can sit back and think 'Is it worth spending $1000 on unwanted stuff to get back $10?'.
Is it not time to save? Or is it just spend, spend, spend and collect points for a flight to the middle of no where?
Think about it.

I was checking out http://www.airmiles-creditcards.net/ and I would say that the American Express Air Miles Gold Credit Card and Gold Mosaik Air Miles Mastercard are the two best choices...

I have an AmEx with up to 2% cash rebate but I'm shopping right now for an Air Miles credit card.

Don't just use your CC for the sake of accumulating miles and make sure to pay off your balance every month otherwise you'll just ended up loosing money on this deal!

@Sephardic-Male
Why are they scam? Can you elaborate?

Watch out for Amex credit cards. If you decide one day you do not need the card, they WILL NOT CANCEL the card from your credit history, no matter how they tell you. Their system will cancel your card to you, however they will go every year to Equifax

Sorry had to stop typing.
They will call Equifax and keep renewing your card with them, You will end up having a deficency of the amount of your credit card with you for life. So you want to get mortgage, you are down because your credit show you still have a credit card with Amex. You will call them in Mumbay and they will tell you the card is dead, they do nor understand the dillem a about our credit history in North America. My experience, No matter what they offer, do not go with Amex.
On other hand, ask a store why they do not carry Amex, they will tell you they are lousy in their payment. Why less places accept Amex, ... the list goes on.
Your choice man, try something better,

Oops, sorry, entered my name then pressed enter and the dumb thing posted.

Anyway, I also want to add my 2 cents here on how STUPID american express is. I applied for the AM credit card and I was approved, they then phoned me and told me everything is great with the app but they just required a copy of 2 other credit card statements proving my mailing address so they would not mail their ax to the wrong address. Ok, fine this makes sense kinda so it was May 6 2008 and I faxed them a visa and a m/c statement both from March 2008. Two days later they phone me and tell me this is not good enough and they want me to find my April 2008 statements!!! I said to the rep on the phone but I thought all you wanted was credit card address verification? Well, we really need to see your most current statements so w will put your app on hold until you find your April 2008 statements and then I remembered this thread which I had read before I sent in my app and I said to the lady on the phone, you know what? forget it!!! Keep your stupid credit card, if you guys are going to give me grief over one month of statements and I'm not even a customer yet, I can just imagine how you will treat me after I become a customer just cancel my application. Then she says "all right, just for the record, you are asking me to cancel the current application in progress?" YES!!!! "Ok, no problem, if you ever change your mind just call us back."

In closing, I really don't think american express is worth the hassle. Get a BMO Mosaik AM card.

i think there is some confusion here. there are a few different offers.

first there is Airmiles and aeroplan. these are two different programs.

for airmiles. amex has a no fee airmiles cc $20 =1 airmile.

Li, THANK YOU! This makes the MOST sense for me and keeps the math simple. I too, know MANY people that over spend to flaunt a 50% in reduction on travel. Cold, hard cash works for me too. Thanks for voicing an easy, clear concept.
