Super Vancouver: Is it time for a Mega City?

While Ontario's decision to consolidate greater Toronto communities into a mega city caused a great deal of early concern, the results seem to point to success.

At a time when the public is looking for less government and more value for every tax dollar, does it make sense to duplicate such services as police and fire across several lower mainland communities? Are there not considerable savings to be had from merging such services into one coordinated organization?

In addition, there has always been considerable public concern about the make-up and mandate of the GVRD, which many taxpayers see as yet another layer of government, and one that is not accountable to citizens.

Few would argue against the need for coordination throughout Greater Vancouver. If that's the case, why not take the bold step and create a super Vancouver, with one broadly representative council that comes with an equally broad public mandate, a single mayor, and a dramatic reduction in the administrative duplication that comes from having multiple municipalities within a short distance of one another.

  1. Common sense says amalgamation makes financial sense.
  2. Why do we need to pay a dozen mayors, police chiefs and city managers, when one of each could do the job in the new Metro Vancouver ?
  3. More and more issues are regional issues, particularly as boundaries between communities blur. So, why not bite the bullet and do the right thing by creating a super city?
  4. If the GVRD has trouble relating to voters because its unelected for that job, why not create a super city that can put local issues to one side in favour of bigger regional priorities?
  5. At the end of the day, no mayor and council is going to vote to put themselves out of a job, no matter how good a case is made. So, isn't it incumbent on the senior level of government, namely the province, to recognize the good sense in having a super city, and get on with the job?
Gordon Campbell and his Liberal group can make this happen by rewriting the City Charter to allow for amalgamation of the members of the GVRD .

More efficient and less duplication in government is what is needed in BC , no more parochialism ...

I'd be all for it, if it worked.

Toronto:
  • Despite predictions of major efficiencies, costs have gone the other way - $1.25 billion higher today than projections.
  • The harmonization of collective agreements and services among the six jurisdictions lead to higher costs and higher taxes.
  • Toronto now accounts for only 5% of the metro area's growth vs. 30% before as more expensive services and taxes take their toll.
Amalgamation hasn't worked for L.A., New York or Chigago, either. People are leaving New York and Chicago.

Thank you for helping me with the avatar thing. I knew that I could find it again, but I was wondering if it was time for a change.

Amalgamation does sound good, and it makes a heckuva lotta sense. But I can't find any example of it doing any good anywhere in North America.

I think it is posible as long as there's a great degree of commitment and co-operation amongst the different municipalities.
