EDMONTON - The 26-year-old man fatally injured outside a family reunion Sunday was once implicated in two gang-related homicides and was awaiting trial for assaulting a woman. Chilliwack realtor gunned down in his car late Wednesday was closely associated with the notorious United Nations criminal organization, The Vancouver Sun has learned.
In fact, Mike Gordon, 33, had bought and sold a number of properties for the UN gang's jailed leader Clayton Roueche. Roueche, an accused international trafficker, is scheduled to go to trial in Seattle Sept. 8 on a series of cocaine- and marijuana-smuggling charges. Gordon, who worked for the Surrey office of Best Bet Realty, was shot to death about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 5600-block of Promontory Road in Chilliwack. Chilliwack RCMP said Gordon was known to them and was killed in a targeted slaying. The UN gang has suffered a number of blows in recent months, at the hands of both law enforcement agencies and gangland rivals. Gordon's slaying comes just a month after another UN realtor, Elliott (Taco) Castaneda, was shot to death in Guadalajara, Mexico along with the gang's Mexican connection, Ahmet (Lou) Kaawach. Castaneda had been working for Abbotsford's Homelife Realty, but resigned from his job in June. At his wake in the Fraser Valley city July 25, police searched mourners and seized two guns.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vancouver is recording a drop in most crime levels over 2006.

Acting Chief Doug LePard says the 2007 annual reports there are still some areas to be concerned about. "We have seen continued drops in property crime and total crime. These levels still remain too high, as far as we're concerned, and there are some disturbing increases in gang violence. We're putting a lot of energy and resources into focusing on that problem."

LePard says as more cops are hired, other officers are able to concentrate on specific types of crime.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - ICBC's net income for the first half of the year was up over a quarter of a billion dollars. You might think that would mean a break on your basic car insurance but that's not going to happen.

$255-million net income over six months sounds like a lot of dough. However, ICBC's Adam Grossman says it's not enough to bring down basic insurance premiums.

"Our optional rates are down this year, the third time in four years they've gone down, and we're not proposing any increase in our basic rates this year, the second time in four years that's happened."

While basic insurance rates may be stable this year, Grossman says ICBC's investment income has started to decline.

That could be a hint we may face higher basic car insurance rates next year to make up for the shortfall.

What the fu.ck? You might raise rates when you make 1/4 billion in profit in 6 months.
