Japan aims to improve forest CO2 absorption

A new government white paper stresses the need to promote the growth of forests nationwide by removing unnecessary trees. This process, known as "thinning", creates healthier forests that absorb greenhouse gases more efficiently.

The forestry ministry's annual white paper was released on Tuesday. It calls for the measure as a part of efforts to meet Japan's obligations set by the Kyoto Protocol.

Japan is required by 2012, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 6 percent from 1990 levels. 3.8 percent of the total will be realized through increased CO2 absorption by forests.

The ministry says that in order to achieve this goal, 3.3 million hectors of forest should be "thinned" over the next 6 years.

It also says that by 2012, carbon dioxide absorption by forests in Japan needs to reach 4,767 tons annually, or an increase of 34 percent from the current level.

The whitepaper also calls for new measures to reduce pollen allergies, suffered by about 10 percent of the Japanese population. Toward this goal it calls for designating areas to plant trees that produce less pollen and to increase annual production of such seedlings to 10 million by 2017.
