My families from the Orkneys. The last of them came over in early 1800's.

My question is...Do I still qualify as a Scot?

Thanks.

I know it's a crazy question but I went to my wifes Christmas party a couple of years ago and I was sitting next to a recently immigrated Scot and he baldly stated that I was no more Scot than any other Canadian. He seemed pretty adamant about it so I was wondering if his attitude was universal or something.

He'd be talking out of the other sound of his mouth fast if it suited him, like "You're no more Canadian than me"

I may be second generation scottish, but am proud to tell anyone that I am a Scot, and would never dream of telling anyone that they are not, regardless how long or when they left.

If any Scott ever starts being friendly and telling you that you too can be Scottish. Leave. This is how they suck people into buying thier booze.

Before 1971, Scots were listed as a separate category from the British and constituted the 3rd largest ethnic group after the English and French.

In the last census, 5 million Canadian families (almos the population of Scotland) checked "Scottish" as their ethnic origin--a remarkable number given that many more would have checked "Canadian" or another category--ie. those that have a Scots/English background.

What's the old saying regarding the differing temperments between us and our southern neighbours? USAmerica is what you get when the Irish settle a country and Canada is what you get what the Scots settle a country.

It seems to me that the Hudsons Bay Company is responsible for the number of Scots in this country. For example, from the time they came over, until about the 1940's, my moms side of the family all worked for the Hudsons Bay Company. My fathers side worked for them during the 1800's. Traders, the whole lot of them.

According to the census that Dougald quoted, there's 5 million Scots Canadian families. So it kinda makes me wonder how many are originally from the Orkneys, all of them? Maybe, excepting the Orangemen of course. lol. I have no idea where they're coming from.

Anyway, all that being said, I would probably have answered that I was Canadian because that's what I am. It's what I've been telling people my whole life. Whenever someone asks my nationality, I say to them, I am Canadian. lol. It's true ;)

It would be a better Canada because it would be more English. Scots suck ass. They are the losers of the UK. Bunch of bums really.

Scots are English wannabee's.........They make me laugh when they go on about Celtic or Rangers. Either of these teams would not survive in the English premier division.

Giggle...there are a great group of girls that hang out with this bunch...unfortunately for me they are all taken...but you would have fun with them..very down to earth!  Have a good one!

I was born in England, but have lived 16 years of my life in Scotland, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh. I didnt get alot of shit cos i was english, i consider myself having lived there so long to call myself half and hlaf. Ive grown up in scotland since i was 4 and have just grown up with that culture. I dont think you can say your "scottish" if your great great grandad once came from there. Thats bullshit, making false claims about who YOU are. And canada rocks, is a great country, have met quite a few scottish/english/irish.

Anyways, god save the queen :P And Rangers.

If you are talking to me then I've already stated that I consider myself Canadian first and yes I am proud of it.

Thanks for your concern.
