If you want to become a nurse, go to a college or university nursing course. This one appears to be very lacking in basic nursing skills. You need hands on training. I do not believe these courses would give you the skills to even pass the licensing exams?  Be wary. Sounds too hokey.

I am applying at Stenberg, and luckily my Mum is on the board of nursing and has told me that out of 25 students, 24 took the exam and 22 passed.  That's a very high passing rate and I'm positive that I'll have a good experience with them.  I really hope I do.

Plus, they are accredited, which not all private colleges are, which means that once you graduate, the hospitals will recognize your diploma.  2 days of research and a Mum who is on the board can really do wonders!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Plus, it states right on their site that they give you lifetime career help.  They're not happy until you're employed and from what I've heard 100% of their students have jobs in the medical field before they've graduated.

these so called "colleges" don't teach skills all they do is give you tests and assignments and if you go full-time you are expected to do 6 and more modules a semester you have calsses 8 hours a day with tons of homework

I've just graduated from the LPN program at this school and can tell you that if you have the time, look into other schools. The adminstration is very unorganized, none of the student services representatives have ever worked to help myself or my classmates. Up until the point that you've been in the program for a couple weeks, they treat you like gold. When you go for your initial interview, they will build you up (like most private colleges) and tell you about how great the school is and how almost every student has really enjoyed going there etc. They reassure you and reiterate that they are there for your success. $20,000+ later, you realize that all they did was tell you bold-faced lies. My classmates and I are ecstatic to finally be done because we are tired of the stress Stenberg has put us through.

Here are some examples of the experiences I've had:

-They do not screen clinical (practicum) instructors at all- 2 of my clinical instructors were absolutely horrible teachers. I even question their abilities to provide compassionate care for patients, let alone help students gain the skills they need to suceed in their careers. They caused a few of my classmates to consider quitting the program due to their lack of sensitivity and ability to teach...one of these instructors (a young RN, with 3 years experience) actually called one of my patients a "crackhead", nice eh? Both of them berated and insulted our intelligence (I do realize that lots of students in any field may experience this, but this was extreme) repeatedly

-They ignore any complaints you put in, if you want to make a grievance about an instructor, they give you an evaluation sheet which I am convinced goes straight to the shredder, because they don't follow up, and keep the same instructors employed without retraining them

-I recieved two crucial textbooks AFTER I had written my final exam for that portion of the course, even after I harassed admin to get them for me. The class as a whole recieved other textbooks late as well, and when we complained via email to Student Services, they told our instructor to tell us to "stop bothering them and that they couldn't control when the trucks would be coming in to drop them off" instead of dealing with each of us professionally

-They treat you badly if you put up a fuss...Our class as a whole made a formal grievance about two instructors and although they stopped working there, we were treated badly by an instructor who had actually gotten them the job. One of my classmates complained about our clinical instructor, and he had to have a meeting with the Dean because of it. Needless to say, she almost failed the practicum (everyone else got between 90-100 percent) and he singled her out during our shifts after that by being critical and VERY hard on her. She did not deserve this treatment, and was one of the best nurses in our program. She did not pursue the matter further, like others in our class because she knew as well as we all did that Stenberg simply does not give a s***!

I'm tired of writing this. I'll post more experiences as I think of them. The bottom line is, do not choose Stenberg to complete your education. If you're even thinking about applying, please refrain and take it from someone who has had to put up with utter crap. If this helps just one person think twice about going to this school, I'll be satisfied.

If you are considering the psychiatric nursing program, the Kwantlen BPN program is really good, you'll be paying about the same price but you'll get a degree. It's 4 years (starts in May) and you can work as a UGN after your second year. Private colleges are a rip off- Good luck

stenberg sucks.
i am now in talks with pctia( accreditaion) because this college is so bad.  they treat you like crap and then when their done doing that they do it some more.  the instructors there don't have their credentials as teachers and the ones that do want to get out of there.  everyone in our class had to get another teacher because the one we had recieved so many rotton evaluations.

to those who are unsure about going to stenberg, i feel yah!!!, I'm enrolled for January semester for their LPN program.and all I can say about negative comments about the school is 'ignore them' and think for youself...i know its a lot of money but all schools have ups and downs...think of it this way, maybe its not stenberg's fault why these students are upset after all..the problem could be with them...its all about you determination...i remember when i was taking summer classes in kwantlen, my prof barely teaches, its more like self study, and yet i got an A on the final exam...its all about how self confidence...hope this helps

Who goes to these pathetic colleges?

The same people who think that VCC (Vancouver Career College) is the real VCC
or that
RCIT (on Kingsway near Fraser) is in any way as good as BCIT?

Pathetic.

This is an awesume site!
I am interested in taking a course from Steinberg College, and while I was in the reception area, a nursing student sitting next to me told me to RUN and that the college just takes your money!! I have been getting seriously mixed reviews about this college.
I was so excited about the course, but will not go there if they have a bad rep.
If you have graduated from there, or were happy or unhappy with the school, please help!!

I'm thinking of taking the Medical Labatory assistant program through Stenberg. Does anyone have any comments regarding this course and whether they are as credible as they claim?

DO NOT TAKE The Medical Lab Program at Stenberg, I took it back in 2003 and it sucked. Back then it was a combo class and out of the 16 that started only 4 of us graduated and from that only 2 of us are in the lab. One is a clerical and the other still works at Tim's Hortons paying off the student loan.

If you seriously want to be a Lab assistant get on the wait list for West Coast College.

DO NOT GO TO STENBERG OR MTI for the lab program or you won't get hired. I had the best grades in my class and I had to get hired through staffing at VGH to get into the lab there. Bio Labs will not hire stenberg grads.

Be careful they just want your money and do not care about you life afterwards.

Oh and for you who think their 100% job placement. ITs skewed numbers, and they back track on their guarentee of lifetime job placement help.

Do your research. Don't waste your time, money or life with these people.

Good luck.

Yikes, I applied, but after reading this even if I am accepted I think I will decline. Too much money to invest on a gamble.

I am in the RPN program @ Stenberg right now and it is a lot of self-directed learning. Some of the teachers are bad and same goes with clinical instructors. I find that at any school you will find profs that you don't like. Organization is sometimes a problem as well as communication with some teachers. If you lay low and do your work then you'll be fine. You might be paying more because it is private but in the end you get through the program quicker and you're working sooner. The program is condensed so that is cheaper for living expenses as well. If you want you can complete your degree after grad online with a better institution - Douglas or Thompson Rivers. In the end I think most of the learning happens at the practicums or on the job anyways. We just got a new Dean and program coordinator and so far things have changed for the better. Hopefully this continues.

I am taking the RPN program. Organization is a HUGE problem. We have outdated texts, poor communication with instuctors (who seem to never be present in online discussions) and typos in the vast majority of our online instructions. But what is worst is the disorganization of our practicums. It is a HUGE struggle for us to get placements, we are stuck where ever, we get no choice in the matter. And while past grads have got hired, there is a lot of negative stigma about Stenberg. I do feel I am learning lots, but be aware.

i am giving serious thought re: applying for the RPN program at Stenberg...those of you who are in the program, do you think it's worth your time and money? i work casual as a mental health worker and feel it's time to have more say in how clients are treated and served.

Hello there. I almost gave them my $38,000 until I did some reasearch ..
Take my advice and go to a proper nursing school. With online courses, you miss out on SO MUCH of the important parts of learning. You need to learn hands-on in the field and in a classroom enviroment. They say that almost all of their students get hired on their graduation day, and if you don't then you may take another course for free. That is the trick, most people never make it to graduation. They do not prepare you properly.
Nursing is an amazing field to get into, but your a dumbass if you try to learn it online

Douglas, BCIT, UBC .....

ANy of those private colleges are just a waste of time and money!

And w/ cuts to health care in BC nursing opportunities are becoming more competitive!

Every school has it's ups and downs.... I attended Douglas for pre-entry psychiatric nursing and just graduated from Stenberg. My class had a 100% CRPNBC pass rate as did the class before us (their first class). If you want to get the psychiatric nursing program done fast, and are self motivated and a fast learner, then sure, go to Stenberg. If you want a thorough learning experience, choose otherwise. I have high hopes now that there is a new Dean for the program, as the old Dean was one of the main reasons why I despised the school. Now that the former director of the CRPNBC is Dean, I am certain that problems within the program will be sorted out (ie. online instructors who do nothing other than post your assignment and give you a grade at the end of the course) and that all instructors will be credited to teach.
