Tamara's son will probably beable to live on his own but he still will need assisted living of some sort.

No you don't know that. There are many people with DS who live on their own WITHOUT any sort of assistance whatsoever.

I know one familly that has a DS child who is a adult and found a person with DS they got married. I think both of them are fixed so they can't have offspring.

Tamara is probably a good mother and would have liked to have a normal child being it probably would be the only kid she would have.
well good luck to them. One good thing about being retarded is that they have awesome sex lives because they are so uninhibited. So they will be a happy couple.

I knew one woman who was downs, but she was not retarded. She had all the physical characteristics of DS, but she had a normal IQ. She ended up getting her associates degree in childhood development and worked in a pre-school.
She ofcourse did live on her own. But finding a DS person like her is very rare.

There are obviously different degrees of Down... just like retardation.

There was always that slow kid in class you was always a little bit behind everyone else but looked normal.
Oh... that was me

The majority of you, Truthy standing out as one of the worst, are disgusting excuses for human beings. The only "retarded" (using the dictionary meaning of 'backward' and 'delayed') thing about any of this is your view points. Most of you come across as obtuse, ignorant, and so last century naive and I feel so deeply sorry for you. You know NOTHING of the medical side of down's syndrome, people with down's syndrome, or empathy for those who love family or friends with down's syndrome. I'd trade a million people like you for just one gentle, loving, good, person with down's syndrome.

You must be very miserable people to be able to flippantly throw such cruel, unfeeling words out onto the internet. I hope your lives improve and you learn to love yourselves a little more so that you don't poison the world with your hatred any further.

Given that people don't tend to change, at the very least, I hope your organs are good.

To all of you who posted the nasty comments, do you not have sisters and mothers. Imagine someone saying your sister was a ........... What is wrong with you? You don't sound stable or normal, seriously.
Why can't this forum locate the IP address of all the slanderous users? It is clear that false and malicious statements have been made.
Someone please do something to stop the vile and despicable replies.

Her "beautiful" son as you put it is going to be a burden to society all becasue she was to stupid to do the research and take the necesary medical procedures to ensure a healthy pregnancy. She is at fault and myself as a tax payer is going to have to pay for her mistake so I have every right to call her what she is - a stupid bitch. We live in a society where medical information and testing is available to all that require it, she was negligent and ignored the risks involved and our society will pay for it. I feel sorry for the school teachers ten years from that will have to deal with her drooling cretin spawn in a classroom setting. In the end the ones that really suffer will 'its' able-minded classmates who won't be getting the attention or funding required for a proper education because of Tamara's life poor choices.

She was very selfish and should encur the wrath that this forum has voiced. Why should we the tax payers have to pay for her poor life choices? Face facts she was a dumb bitch and we are all on the hook for it!

Your tax dollars? lol How much are you going to contribute? perhaps 10 cents a year! Give me a break LOSER!
Hope one day you will face the same situation you cold hearted bastard!

You honestly believe in holding every child back because of one? How is this helping society? 10 cents a year times how many "disabled people"? Do the math.

I absolutely agree with you about deleting this thread and banning the ips of the nasty posters... but I would never wish for anyone's personal information to be posted public on a forum. It's happened to me once on another forum, where someone posted my email, IP, ISP, real name, and even my latitude/longitude and it was absolutely terrifying and I would not wish that on my worst enemy.

i doubt they'd ever post their ip/email, etc, but when you have people suggesting infanticide due to ds, all bets are off. these people are MONSTERS & i want to know who they are!

it's their opinion, and if they REALLY believe what they're saying, they should be able to defend themself. if i saw that one of my employees had written one of those comments, i'd fire them in an instant. i don't want to keep company with people like that -- who knows what other evil lurks within?

out 'em, i say! (again, i know they won't, but let's make the haters squirm a bit, shall we?)

Monsters? How naive. Most nations murder retarded new borns because they are a major drain on society. See many retarded people in China or India much? I don't think so. Now watch what you say, because remember, we are supposed to put the values and cultures of these great nations up high in our modern day Vancouver.

whoever said we were "supposed to put the values and cultures of these great nations up high in our modern day Vancouver" -- what are you talking about? nobody says we're supposed to look to post-mao china for tips on our moral compass! or india, who's going through so much cultural change since it began its recent spike in modernization and urbanization that grandparents are being thrown to the curb, or worse, DROPPED OFF ALIVE AT CREMATORIUMS BY THEIR CHILDREN who don't want the burden of taking care of them (google it! it's all over the news!). the government reacted by introducing (and think have since passed) a bill that would punish the children for doing such a thing.

nope, sorry, it's not me the one being naive here by calling the haters monsters.

You cannot even compare Down's Syndrome to cancer, that is a slap in the face not only to people with Down's Syndrome, but also to people who have cancer.

We all know that cancer is a deadly disease. Many years ago my aunt on my father's side lost her husband to cancer. A couple of years ago my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Last year my aunt on my mother's side died of cancer.

Down's Syndrome, on the other hand, is not a disease. It does not harm or kill people. So why all of the negativity?

Bite it, you scum!

If you can't handle the truth surrounding mental and physical retardation then you are part of the problem, and your opinions are null and void.

To suggest a Down's Syndrome baby is a blessing is a bunch of shit. It's like people who get cancer and say it's a blessing because it taught them the value of life--bullshit!

That's just a way of not making yourself feel bad.

there is a difference between free speech and hate speech, and in this country, you're not allowed to disseminate hate speech. to make it easier for you to understand, swap this thread's target, people with ds, with, let's say, your race or religion, whatever that is. does it sound bad to you now if someone was to suggest we murder you at birth (or abort you in the womb) because of your race? or later because of your religion? didn't think so. this forum is rife with hate speech and needs to be shut down. if this is incomprehensible to you, talk to your priest, doctor, mental health provider -- anybody who can help.

No, abortion isn't technically considered murder, but aborting a baby because of down's syndrome, asperger's syndrome autism etc. is discrimination, and in my opinion it would be akin to aborting a baby for not being white.

Well your opinion is meaningless to the women who choose to abort for whatever reason. Look the abortion debate ended in 1988. It is no longer an issue. Overpopulation is the world's biggest problem. If only the Catholic church would start to teach their brain-washed followers to practice abortion. But instead, Catholics are breeding like rabbits.

some posters suggested that it was socially irresponsible to not abort fetuses with ds -- that's what we're opposed. we both support a woman's right to choose.

i think it would be better for pope benedict to allow and encourage the use of birth control and condoms. nobody wants to have an abortion!

I think there should be a legislated eugenics programme implemented in this country. People with so-called hereditary illnesses should be sterilized, even if they object. And the list of persons classified as hereditarily ill should include included those suffering from , DS, congenital feeble-mindedness, schizophrenia, manic depression, hereditary epilepsy, Huntington's chorea, hereditary blindness, hereditary deafness, and serious physical deformities. People with chronic alcoholism could also be sterilized.

I am also for euthanizing the feeble-minded. The basis for this practice seems to be that in an efficient nation there should be no room for weak and frail people. It is evident from the many reports which we are receiving that the people's feelings are being badly hurt by the measures ordered and that the feeling of legal insecurity is spreading which is regrettable from the point of view of national and state interest.

I don't feel sorry at all. I think that is silly. People with down syndrome can function perfectly fine in society and Tamara exudes a personality that is very nurturing and kind.

the people I feel sorry for are the ones that are posting like bigots and act "special" themselves, those are the people who will and do have problems in life.

I've read all the comments above and am very torn. I do agree with amnio and have actually been present while it has been done. It's not a big deal and I feel is very important when over the age of 35. Also, there is a blood test that can be done which may determine if you are carrying a child with Down Syndrome.. I am only 24 but still made the choice to go through these tests. My first pregnancy was fine and I have a happy healthy little boy, but the 2nd pregnancy wasn't going as smoothly. My numbers were down and they couldn't figure out why. My doctor wanted to put me through tests to determine if the baby was okay. I was ready and willing to abort if nessecary. I could not possibly raise a child that has down syndrome or any other major birth defect. This is the reason they have tests these days and I fully back them up. I ended up loosing the baby at 13 weeks, so I know someone was looking out for me.

I don't think the comments about "mud" and putting down this beautiful lady are right. She has made the choice to love this child and be there for him through all the tough times he's going to have. Don't you think she is going to read these comments everyone posts and feel horrible. She must be going through such a hard time and its not right that everyone put her down. It is an unfortunate thing that this little baby has to spend the rest of his life suffering, but he's here and everyone just needs to accept it. Maybe next time, Tamara will go through the proper tests and maybe her story will remind others who are planning on having children to monitor their pregnancies.

I do agree with most of what your saying. Prevention is the key and we obviously aren't being strict enough; however, even healthy people with no previous medical conditions end up with "defective" children and people with a file full of medical conditions end up with perfect children.. so how do we prevent this? We can't sterilize everyone!

as of now, i am diverting my energy from writing on this thread to seeing that it is deleted. come monday when discovervancouver.com is back to work, this thread had better be gone. if you agree, please contact them here and ask that they remove it:

http://www.discoverv...contact-us.html

within this site's 'terms and conditions,', they have this to say about the forum:

The Website Owner reserves the right to remove any material submitted or posted by you in the public areas, without notice to you, if it becomes aware and determines, in its sole and absolute discretion that you are or there is the likelihood that you may, including but not limited to - 5.1 defame, abuse, harass, stalk, threaten or otherwise violate the rights of other users or any third parties; 5.2 publish, post, distribute or disseminate any defamatory, obscene, indecent or unlawful material or information;...

clearly the disinformation and hate speech against people with ds being posted here falls within their grounds for having it removed.

have a nice day.
