CSR.

Are you currently working there? If so, what's it like? How are the people and benefits?

Sorry, I don't.

I was stopped by the second round interview. Even though, I believe they are nice people, you know, I am a els, English is tough for me. My goal is Network Administrator. They just expect someone can speak English fuently, not like native speaker.

If you are in the stage of accepting the offer, I believe you must have got what I saw, nice place and a lot of young happy people. I mean the CSRs.

I just hope they don't make their employees work long hours like a typical dot com company...

I decided not to apply for this company because I was  really afraid they might make people work long hours. Yeah, I really want to know too, what it's like working there. A lot of dot.com type companies think it's totally acceptable to work 12 hours a day as long as they provide free pop, recreational facilities, etc...

One good example would be EA. They 'expect' their employees to work long hours by offering all kinds of goodies.   It might be perfect for some but for those that doesn't care for those 'goodies', it will be unfair to expect them to work long hours espeically if they have family to take care of.

Work is work. Life is your family.

I know Riptown very well.  they are a client of mine.  They pay all roles very well, and are pretty casual.  They also have 'beer fridays' after 3:30pm.

how are they doing financially? I hope they are not wasting so much money on 'perks' like those dot com companies and end up going bankrupt!

I worked there for 3 months, not my cup of tea. I have issue with gambling, but that's just me. Overall it's a pretty casual environment, everybody's friendly. But the CEO guy is a control freak. One time a guy in my group sent him an email about his personal opinion, he got fired that same day. The CEO guy also hired his own girlfriend at that time to be the Director of Communications. That girl used to have her photo taken for Playboy. Pretty much everything could happen there. A poker manager got promoted to VP in one year, who know what happened during that year. Very high turn-over rate. All people I worked with left the company in one year. Not sure about CSR though. Heard they don't get paid well.

I was expected to put in more than 8 hours a day. I was one of the interface designers. I think the hours you put in your work depends on which department you work at.

ex-riptowner, why did quit? Was it just you didn't like the gaming company or does it have anything to do with work environment, benefits, salary, etc..?

personally, I don't think any company should EXPECT their employees to work more than 8hrs. Employees should complete their task however long it should take...8hrs, 10hrs, etc..
BUT companies should not expect their employees to stay longer hours just for the sake of it. It's not how long you work but how hard.

I don't think this company is my cup of tea.

... they do appear to have a high turnover rate, but just wonder, how the working atmosphere is like there... and what are the reasons behind the high turnover...? Anybody?

High turnover means shit company.  Plain and simple.

I work there as a CSR and can tell you that it is not a shit company. There is NOT a high turnover right either. It's higher than 'normal' companies soley because most of the positions are for CSR.   I'm not sure about you but I don't think I want to be a CSR for the rest of my life. It's just a starting point. People quit when they either have enough money to go back to school or decide to get into a more high paying job.

It was a creative blackhole for me. Has essentially one client (Bodog) and your creative juice is focused on very narrowly promoting the same basic concept over and over and over and over again. ex-Riptowner has it about right...there are weird hiring practices especially in the creative or managment positions and you are expected to work long hours with no comment. The guy ex-Riptowner mentioned who got fired for having an opinion wasn't the only one to go that way, I saw 3 other creatives ditched the same way before I quit. Opinions did not seem valued - just tow the line. The CSR people came and went really fast but I also didn't know anyone in my department who worked there more than a year.

Top-notch dollars though if that's all that matters to you Posted Image

I have done a ton of researchon Riptown and am convinced that's where I want to work. My firstchoice would be in their TV/film/music dept but am also interested intheir PR/Events side. I have the experience and the qualifications butdon't have anyone in my network who works there or knows anyone there.I've tried the sending in the resume path but think a personalrecommendation/introduction would speed up the process. So is thereanyone on here who can help me out and headhunt me/introduce me? I willgive you a percentage of my first paycheque for the help.
Kits, if you're still reading this board, do you think you could help me with this?

Hey kits are you still around? I noticed you've posted a few posts displaying knowledge in the IT world of Vancouver and offering help to those looking for work.
I'm currently looking for a career opp out there as I am moving from Toronto.
I've applied to riptown though someone I that works there but it's still kind of early to tell what the outcome will be. Mind giving me a shout and helping me out with any info or even passing along my resume to your recruiter friend?
Thanks

RiptownWannabe and ThinkinRiptown - how are you doing with your quest to work at riptown.com?  Just wondering because I recently had an interview with them.  Still waitin' to find out what happens next.  I was surprised because I never actually applied for the position - a riptown recruiter found my resume on monster.ca and called me in.  As others have said, it's a very relaxed, casual environment.  The interview was with the hiring manager and the recruiter - both of them were very kind and down to earth.  The interview was held at Seymour St. location (although the position will be for Burnaby, Still Creek Drive, new data centre).  In fact, the recruiter even told me not to wear a suit to the interview because they are pretty casual.  I nixed the jacket and just wore blouse and dresspants...still felt overdressed as everyone who works there was in jeans, even the receptionist!  Even if I don't land this job, it was good experience and uplifting to know there are companies out there like riptown where you can work on a supportive 'team'.  My last job, I was wearing too many different hats - stretched beyond my limit and grossly underpaid.

I am working there now and enjoying every second of it.   Yes, we are very casual and at the same time we are very professional toward our duties.

Panda, I'm assuming you will be in the IT dept since you're going to work at the new datacenter? I can answer any question that you may have.

I went for an interview there and found them to be very vague when I asked them questions about the position. For example, I asked them what the hours were and all they would say was "that depends." Come on, "that depends" ? Who's going to accept a job with that kind of answer? I have a life that doesn't involve work (work is only 1/3 of my 24 hour day) and needed a response more specific than that. Needless to say, I did not end up accepting the position.

Riptown is great. They have competitive salaries, a great culture and regular working hours which is something you do not get at  a lot of other web multimedia companies. We also service some big clients like bodog entertainment group where there are exciting opportunities to work on music, online TV, and gaming products
