In 1863, the Regiment saw its first action when a detachment, numbering 38 men under the command of Captain Chartres Brew, accompanied a punitive expedition dispatched to the Chilcoten. This action was in response to fears of a native uprising sparked by the killing of 13 white miners by members of the Chilcotin Indian Band.

In 1866 there was a perceived threats of invasion by Irish-American Fenians from the United States of America. Fenians had mounted a brief and abortive invasion of Eastern Canada and as a result The Rifles were supplemented by the formation of “The Home Guards” and The Seymour Artillery Company.

In 1874, the New Westminster Rifle Company No. 1 ceased to exist, replaced by the No. 1 Company of Rifles (New Westminster). In 1877 the No. 1 Company of Rifles (New Westminster) was reorganized as the New Westminster Rifle Company, but no increase in its almost totally non-existent funding or equipment was authorized.

In 1892, as a consequence of neglect on the part of the Canadian government the New Westminster Rifle Company was disbanded.

TREASURES IN THE MUSEUM’S COLLECTION

The Dufferin Coach - This coach was used by the Governor General of Canada, the Earl of Dufferin, and his wife when they toured the new province of British Columbia in 1876. It was apparently built in San Francisco, California, for this purpose and was purchased by Mr. Dufferin for $250. The coach was pulled by 4 or 6 horses. It was later used by the BX Company as a VIP coach. The Native Sons of BC bought the coach from Louis Lebordais. In 1929 the coach was rescued from the burning fairgrounds buildings at Queen’s Park and was used for some of the May Day ceremonies.

The New Westminster Museum and Archives has over 27,000 items in its collection, but not all of these can be shown at one time due to space constraints, conservation concerns and other reasons. An artifact or archival item may be considered by us to be a “treasure” if it represents part of the City’s history. Such a “treasure” may or may not have a ‘monetary’ value but its historical value is priceless. Here are a few of the “treasures” that we hold in trust for the citizens of New Westminster:

The Canadian Museum of Flight possesses the only displayed Handley-Page Hampden in the world. On February 13th, 2002, after a 22 year restoration, Museum volunteers saw the 1937 WACO Cabin take to the skies. This restoration was done solely by the Museum’s volunteers whose age range from 16 to 82. Many of our volunteers spent their career in the aviation industry just to retire and put in full time hours at the Museum. To date we have six aircraft flying: Tiger Moth, Fleet Finch, SE5a, WACO Cabin, WACO INF, and the Harvard. Restoration started on the Fleet Canuck on January 8th, 2003, which when completed, will be the Museum’s seventh flying aircraft.

In the spring of 1894, a group of visionaries formed the Art, historical and scientific Association. Using borrowed artifacts and space they opened Vancouver’s first museum Exhibition. A banner invited visitors to view “Paintings and Curios”.

The City Museum, and its collection, moved in 1905 to the Carnegie Library at Main and Hastings.

In 1968, the Museum moved into its current landmark building on the south shore of False Creek in what is now known as Vanier Park. That same year it was renamed the Centennial Museum.

In 1905, the museum opened in the Carnegie Library, and began an uphill climb, that was to survive two World Wars, and the great depression. These calamities took their toll on the citizens of Vancouver, but when times were toughest, they rallied behind their museum.

The Museum houses some 535,000 ethnographic and archaeological objects, many of which originate from the Northwest Coast of British Columbia. Massive totem poles, carved boxes, bowls, and feast dishes are featured in the Museum’s Great Hall, while smaller (but no less magnificent) pieces in gold, silver, argillite, wood, ceramic, and other materials are exhibited elsewhere in the galleries.

The Museum’s extensive Visible Storage system provides public access to approximately 13,000 objects from around the world for comparison and study, as well as for community-based research by artists, elders, students, and others. The Museum is thus uniquely placed both to share and to gain knowledge through public participation and exchange. Training in Museum Anthropology is offered at the BA, MA, and Ph.D levels.

History of Stanley Park

Stanley Park is recognized around the globe as one of the great parks of the world!

Dedicated by Lord Stanley on October 29,1889, Stanley Park stands as a protected, forested park at the western edge of Downtown Vancouver. The Canadian Government has leased the park to the City of Vancouver for $1 per year since 1887. Over the past 100 years, the park has been a point of interest for both mariners and tourists. The Seawalk officially opened in 1971, providing one of the most scenic jogging areas in the city. Today, the park plays host to numerous attractions including the Vancouver Aquarium.

More About Stanley Park

Stanley Park, Vancouver’s first, is an evergreen oasis of 1,000 acres close to the heart of Vancouver’s downtown core. It offers numerous of activities and attractions from the children’s farmyard, to a miniature railway.

Its natural west coast atmosphere offering a back drop of majestic cedar, hemlock and fir trees embraces visitors and transports them to an environment rich in tranquility.

The park abounds in wildlife and its features appeal to the naturalist, the plant lover or one who would do nothing more than relax in beautiful surroundings.

The forest gives the park a more natural character than most other urban parks, leading many users to consider it an urban oasis.[18] It is primarily second and third growth and contains many huge Douglas-fir, Western Redcedar, Western Hemlock, and Sitka Spruce trees.

Stanley Park contains numerous natural and man-made attractions that lure visitors to the park. Unlike other large urban parks, Stanley Park is not the product of a landscape architect, but has evolved into its present, mixed-use configuration.

Read more about the Origins of Stanley Park in a story from the Greater Vancouver Book.
