Park & Tilford Gardens
440 - 333 Brooksbank Avenue, North Vancouver (604) 984-8200 Eight separate theme gardens on the North Shore, created in 1968 by a privately-owned distillery. In the Rose Garden there are nearly 300 plants, in 24 varieties. The Oriental Garden, This western interpretation of the traditional Oriental style garden containing pines, maples, and bamboo pruned in the traditional Bonsai style, combine to offer an atmosphere for peaceful contemplation. The White Garden, The careful arrangement of plants with white, grey or green leaves or flowers, under a canopy of spring flowering magnolias, make the "White Garden" an interesting study of plant size, form and texture. The Rock Pool, Lush, rich vegetation in a variety of textures and shapes and a captivating waterfall help to enhance the strong rock features of this garden. The Native Garden, A winding footpath and wooden bridge surrounded by cedars, hemlock, ferns, rare native azalea and a collection of other indigenous treasures evoke the cool refreshing shade of a pacific coastal forest. The Herb Garden, This traditional garden is a favourite of many visitors with its pot pourri of fragrances and soft informal layout displaying culinary and medicinal herbs. The Display Garden, This transitional garden provides colourful spring flowering bulbs which are replaced with a cascade of colourful annuals that carpet the raised beds. The Colonade Garden, This shade garden with large magnolias, rhododendrons, and hosta is accented with a long wooden pergola covered with vines and hanging baskets. Capilano College Capilano College and Park & Tilford Gardens share in a unique year round training program at the gardens. The gardens's staff and the College's horticulture instructors work together with horticulture students to provide professional high quality hands-on training in all aspects of landscaping and ground maintenance. After attending daily garden practicums the students return to the college for scheduled horticulture classes. At the end of the academic year 3 or 4 of the best, willing students are hired to work as paid summer gardeners until fall when the next class begins. Free admission and parking.
