The Vancouver Art Gallery, is in the heart of Downtown in the old Vancouver Provincial Courthouse, designed by Francis Rattenbury more than 90 years ago and renovated by noted architect Arthur Erickson in 1983. The gallery offers both historical and contemporary exhibitions of painting, sculpture, graphic arts, photography and video by distinguished regional, national and international artists. A portion of the permanent collection, which covers four centuries of Canadian art as well as Dutch paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries and modern British paintings and sculpture from 1933-1955, is always on view, together with painting and drawings by Emily Carr from the largest permanent collection of her work in Canada.

Since 1983 the Vancouver Art Gallery has focused its acquisitions endowment on art from British Columbia since 1900 and on contemporary international art. There are regularly scheduled tours, lectures and family workshops. The gallery also contains a 25,000 volume non-ciculating reference library, a restaurant and a gift and book shop.
